“As an artist, Ubans’ work has appeared in countless exhibitions regionally, nationally and internationally in Riga, Latvia, and other Latvian venues. His work is also featured in the permanent collections of the Latvian Museum of Art, the Latvian National Museum of Photography, and the collections of Yale, Syracuse, and Pennsylvania State Universities.

As an educator, Ubans has taught painting and drawing at the University of Southern Maine since 1968, where he chaired the Art Department from 1974 to 1979. He was instrumental in developing the department’s curriculum after the merger of the University of Maine at Portland and Gorham State College of UM, and for making the department one of the most widely respected departments of studio art in the Northeast.

Among his many positions of prominence in the art world Ubans served as a consultant for the Latvian Council of Science and the Latvian Academy of Art. He also was chair of the Board of Trustees of the American Folk Life Center at the Library of Congress; a member of the Board of the Maine Commission on the Arts and Humanities; a commissioner for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design; and a member of the National Conference of State Legislators.”

Come along on the adventure of a lifetime! The Rocky Mountains are the back-bone of North America and include some of the most beautiful scenery in the world! We'll take the back-roads as we follow the Rockies from New Mexico to Yellowstone, exploring the familiar and not so familiar natural wonders along the way.

In 1893, Clara Driscoll returns to work for Louis Comfort Tiffany after her husband dies. Because of her passion for color and stained-glass, Tiffany makes her the head of the women's art department. He and Clara begin to develop a new prototype of lamp made of leaded glass (which he will one day be famous for) and Clara puts all of her energy into being recognized not only as a hard worker with an eye for color, but an innovative and brilliant designer as well. Clara longs for love and marriage but two things stand in her way; her own commitment to her art and Tiffany's policy of making any women who marry while working for him resign.

About Me

As an artist, my goal is to bring my work out from the studio and into the world. My focus is on supporting other Maine artists and sharing my art within the community. I am influenced by the natural world as well as the works of artists such as Frank Stella, Wassily Kandinsky, and Hilda Hiary. As an abstract artist I focus on experimentation and reshaping the present artistic environment. Through movement, bold colors, and texture, my art is an expression of the enduring human impulse to create. First Friday, May 6th Jill Cournoyer in the MCMA library

Jill Cournoyer will be exhibiting on First Friday and during the month of May in the MCMA library. Jill's Art is drawn spontaneously with crayons and pencils for the enjoyment of mixing colors and abstractions to see what would develop.

Excitement and adventure abound in "Blazing Paddles" as Warriner presents some of the wildest rides in nature on the biggest navigable rapids in the world.

April 7th, 2011, MCMA Quarterly Meeting at 9:00 am in the library, members come voice your opinion, hear the latest Financial reports, news and health of the Association. Also voting on new membership applications and four Trustee seats expire and need to be voted on. I hope more members will be able to attend!
