July Library Exhibit features contest winning pictures "Click For Cats", a fundraiser for Friends of Feral Felines. The exhibit will open on July 6 for the First Friday Art walk(5:00-8:00pm) and be on display during the month of July, open to the public-10:00am to 3:00pm,Tues.,Wed., and Thursday.

"Tale of Captain Ephraim Jones' 1765 voyage" on the 90' Schooner Mary, which left from Falmouth and sailed to Bermuda and the Turks Island and back. He kept a detailed ship's log upon which Dr. Outwin's talk is based. The program will include a slide presentation, and lots of fabulous photos.

The journey begins in the capital city of Televiv and visits many different regions of the Holy Lands. From the worlds' oldest seaports to the Sea of Galilee with its Christian sites, relate to many stories from the Bible at this Easter season.

“I BEGAN MY STUDIES AS AN ARTIST IN 1987 WHILE ATTENDING CENTRAL COLLEGE IN PELLA, IOWA, WHERE I STUDIED UNDER LAWRENCE MILLS. I LEARNED PRINTMAKING UNDER MILLS AND ALONG WITH IT A STRONG SENSE OF THE CLASSICAL TRADITIONS OF DRAWING. IN 1989 I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY DUTCH ART HISTORY AND TAKE STUDIO COURSES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LEIDEN IN THE NETHERLANDS. THIS BEGAN MY INTEREST IN 17TH CENTURY DUTCH LIFE AND ART. AFTER RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES I TRANSFERRED TO CALVIN COLLEGE AND GRADUATED FROM THERE WITH A B.F.A. IN FINE ART IN 1992. IN 1997 AFTER SEVERAL YEARS WORKING IN THE FIELD OF COUNSELING, I BROUGH MY FOCUS BACK TO ART. I MOVED TO MAINE AND APPRENTICED FOR A YEAR WIth OIL PAINTER, JON ALLAN MARSHALL.”

“Sailing Down to Rio on The Queen Mary 2”

In 1934 The Cunard Line launched the Queen Mary. It was the largest ship of its time and it set a new standard for ocean liners of the era. In 2004, the fourth Queen to sail under the Cunard flag was launched, The Queen Mary 2. At 150,000 tons she is the longest, tallest, widest, biggest ocean liner of the world. And to commemorate the launch, Cunard sent the Queen Mary 2 on a voyage to Rio de Janeiro for the largest party on earth, Carnival.

The MCMA Free Drawing School
1875 to 1988
First Friday February 3th will feature a continuing exhibit of drawings from the MCMA drawing classes of the late 1800’s
Architectural drawings of Will.S. Aldrich(ca.1886), who was a student and draughtsman for MCMA past President and renown architect John Calvin Stevens, along with blueprints and instruction samples from the Free Drawing School of Mechanical and Architectural drawing classes. Also on exhibit are instructor log books of students and bio’s of the instructors.
Will S Aldrich, graduates form MIT in 1888, leaves Portland to work in Boston in 1890, travels Europe for 3 1/2 years on a Rotch Scholarship in 1895. From 1902-1910 Mr. Aldrich works in New York City and from 1910 till his death in 1947 he is an award winning Architect in St. Joseph Missouri.
The Mechanics' library book club meets Tuesday,Feb.7th for a discussion of -Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky -at Noon for an hour. Please bring a lunch, drinks and dessert are provided.

Dec. 2, 2011 , First Friday Art Walk, experience the beauty of Spain and Portugal with a library photo slide presentation from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The "Back Cove Artist Group" will be exhibiting their watercolors and there will be handmade items for sale with proceeds going to the library fund.
Note cards made from a 1859 wood engraving by Bircher & Russell of Boston and being printed again today locally by David Wolfe of Wolfe Editions in Portland will also be available for purchase.
